  1. We discussed the Tarasoff case in class today and I wrote my paper on this case. I am arguing that confidentiality between the doctor and patient is the most imporatant thing. Without confidentiality psychiatric treatments would be almost impossible to to lack of trust. It is a serious concern in the medical and legal field as well. It is morally and ethically right of a person in any of these professions to provide confidentiality. Is confidentiality a privelage or a right?

  2. I agree with Amanda, I also wrote my paper on confidentiality. Being in the medical field, legally we have to sign a form saying that we will not reveal any patient information identifying them. This confidentiality builds trust between the patient and health care professionals. Every person has a right to there privacy.

  3. I also agree with Amanda and Colleen about the importance of confidentiality between physicians and patients. Without that trust between the two parties then treating patients would be impossible for doctors because patients would not tell the truth because they would be afraid that their information would be told to someone else. As a result, in order to treat patients effectively physicians absolutely need to have that confidentiality with their patients.

  4. The absence of confidentiality would certainly cause a lack of trust between the patient and the doctor. While not telling the patient may benefit a few people, the overall distrust it would cause would hurt more people than it would benefit, so I agree with the previous commenters about the importance of confidentiality.

  5. I agree that confidentiality is important between doctors and patients. If confidentiality would be to disappear, then patients won't want to say exactly what is wrong in fear of what the doctor would do. Doctors also would have to watch what they say because patients may tell other people what the doctor said, but it's interpreted in a different way being out of context.

  6. I feel confidentiality is one of the most essential parts of the health care system. If it was not for confidentiality people would not go to get treated in the first place. They would be fearful of embarrassment and who would find out about what there going through. Many medical issues are very personal and if this information could be shared people would not seek help. I know I find confidentiality very important when I am discussing my life with my doctor.

  7. I did my paper on confidentiality as well. I think that this is one of the most, if not the most important aspect of healthcare. We are taught about HIPPA from day one in nursing school. We are not allowed to discuss patient situations unless it is used in a teaching setting with no patient identifiers. It is also important to respect confidentiality to build a relationship between the health care providers and the patients.

  8. Confidentiality is very important, but in a case where someone has a disease that could be potentially life threatening, I think it is important that those working around the disease know the risks that they are taking. It is an affront to their autonomy not to have this information.

  9. What keeps trust sacred in the health care profession is confidentiality. It is important when caring for other people that their business is not shared with others. The least we can do in a persons time of need is be respectful of who they are and who their family is and respect their wishes.

  10. Confidentiality is a vital part of the health care system which promotes trust between patients and care givers. Although I think it is very important to keep confidentiality and not break HIPPA in most situations, it is important to make sure that the safety of healthcare workers is also maintained regarding who they are caring for.

  11. I am not in the medical field but i do know the importance of confidentiality between a doctor and a patient and how vital that is but as soon as that doctor feels like either the patient or the doctor's safety comes into question then that doctor needs to step in and alert the right people.
