Diving Bell & the Butterfly

What other observations or questions do you have about the film?

  1. The film was very interesting. And you couldn't help but admire the hard work and determination of the main character. To be able to write a book by just blinking to letters truely is astonishing to me. There were many twists and turns with the personal stories of his children and the women in his life as well.

  2. I think the movie was interesting, but the fact that it was in a different language made it hard to follow at times. I think it's amazing that the main character could write a whole book using the type of communication he did. The movie was great at showing the viewers what it would really be like to be in his situation. It definitely made me realize that you should never assume the patient cannot hear you and just because someone is unable to speak or move does not mean they are any less of a human.

  3. This film replicate the fact that some have this language barrier to over come. The guy came off to be a jerk to the wife and kids but the actual senario did not go down exactly as the reproduction. If the guy had it any other way he would. They didn't show the guys face till the end so ppl could get to know him better.

  4. I liked this movie a lot. It was cool how it was based on a true story, but the guy was a turd for still 'loving' the lover after how bitchy she was to him. I liked the fact that his children still talked to him and tried to comfort him even though he couldn't respond to them. I think that if i were there age in the same situation I would be afraid to talk to my father.

  5. I remember watching the film a year ago and thinking to myself how terrible it must have been to be in his family situation. It amazes me that despite such odds he was able to not only learn how to sign letters through blinking but also right a book. I agree, with Katie I think that its amazing that the children still had a relationship with him because that must have been hard seeing your father in that position.

  6. I think that this was an amazing movie. I love how the viewer experiences it from the perspective of the paralyzed man. I think it made you feel his emotions more acutely and offered a new perspective. I also loved the part where Jean-Dominique told the woman (I'm still not sure whether it was the mother of his children or the other woman) that he felt that he was her diving bell and he was only dragging her down. She told him that he was also her butterfly, meaning that he also lifted her up. I think this is very powerful because it shows that people in such conditions are not simply burdens but rather are human being with inherent value and they should not be defined by their condition.

  7. Although I did not watch this film with the class, I did watch in in Dr Cate's class last semester. This film was one that I really enjoyed and probably would not have seen otherwise. Although the film is very sad, I admire the man's perseverance and strength he displayed, just to get through one day. He had to put forth so much effort, just to communicate a few words or a sentence, not to mention writing a book! I think I can honestly say that I would never have the strength to do that. What I gained most from this movie was remembering what a difficult life he had. It makes the little things in life that are frustrating or inconvenient seem so small. I also liked that the movie was shown from his perspective, so you could really understand what he was going through.
